    The Astonishing Moment When AR Rahman’s Brilliance Stunned Shankar Mahadevan

    Shankar Mahadevan, the renowned singer and composer who is part of the Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy trio, has recently opened up about his awe and respect for AR Rahman’s musical genius in a video interview.

    In a video interview, Mahadevan who sang for Rahman in numerous hit songs from the 90’s talked about his experience of singing for Rahman’s latest blockbuster, Ponniyin Selvan, a historical epic directed by Mani Ratnam.

    Mahadevan said that he was amazed by the freshness and innovation that Rahman brought to every track of the film, which is based on a classic Tamil novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy. He said that Rahman was able to capture the essence and the era of the film with his music, while maintaining the aesthetics and the sanctity of the story.

    I am always pleasantly amazed and astonished at the way Rahman brings out freshness in every track, it’s very difficult!

    Mahadevan sang two songs for the film, Rakshasa Mama and Veer Raja. He said that both songs were very challenging and enriching to sing, as they had different elements of melody, rhythm, rap and drupad. He said that he enjoyed singing them and hoped that the people also loved them.

    Shankar also evaluated Rahman’s contribution to Indian cinema as “unbelievable” and said that he thanked the almighty for getting Rahman into the industry. He said that Rahman was a rare combination of musical and technical thoroughness, which made him a unique composer. He also said that Rahman had a big baggage of super hit music for all his films with Mani Ratnam, and yet he managed to create something new and fresh every time.

    Mahadevan himself is a renowned musician who has won several awards, including four National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer. He has also acted in a few films and runs an online academy to teach Indian music. He said that he always looked forward to singing for Rahman, as it was a musically rewarding experience.

    Mahadevan has not been the only one

    Notably, He is not the only singer who has praised Rahman’s musical genius. Many other singers and composers have expressed their admiration and gratitude for working with Rahman over the years. Some of them are:

    • Lata Mangeshkar, the legendary singer who has sung many songs composed by Rahman, said that he is a “musical wizard” and a “very humble and kind person”. She said that she loved his music and his voice, and that he had given a new dimension to Indian music.
    • Arijit Singh, the popular singer who has sung many hit songs composed by Rahman, said that he was a “guru” and a “mentor” for him. He said that he learned a lot from Rahman’s music and his approach to singing. He said that Rahman was very supportive and encouraging of his talent.
    • Shreya Ghoshal, the versatile singer who has sung many songs composed by Rahman, said that he was a “genius” and a “magician”. She said that he had a unique way of creating melodies and orchestrations that touched the hearts of the listeners. She said that he was very respectful and generous towards his singers.
    • Vishal Dadlani, the rock singer and composer who is part of the Vishal-Shekhar duo that writes music for Indian films, said that he was a “fan” and a “student” of Rahman. He said that he was inspired by Rahman’s music and his experimentation with different genres and sounds. He said that Rahman was a legend and an icon for Indian music.

    These are just some of the examples of how AR Rahman has influenced and impressed many singers and composers with his musical genius. He has also won many awards and accolades for his music, both nationally and internationally. He is the first Indian to win two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe Award for his music for Slumdog Millionaire (2008). He has also been awarded the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India for his contributions to arts and culture.

    AR Rahman continues to create music that transcends boundaries and genres and appeals to people of all ages and backgrounds. He is truly a musical phenomenon who has enriched the Indian musical landscape with his creativity and innovation.
